Word count, character count & reading time — the complete guide
The Dynamic Tech World Word Counter is a free online tool that counts words, characters, sentences and paragraphs the instant you type or paste your text. Whether you are writing a blog post, a college essay with a strict word limit, a tweet, an SEO meta description or a video script, knowing your exact word count and character count helps you hit the mark on the first try — no guesswork, no manual counting.
How are words and characters counted?
A word is any run of characters separated by whitespace, so
well-known counts as one word and numbers like 2026 count too.
For languages that do not use spaces between words — such as Chinese, Japanese and Korean —
each character is counted as a word, so the total stays accurate worldwide.
Characters includes every letter, digit, space and punctuation mark, while
characters without spaces gives you the tighter count that platforms such as SMS
and some forms care about. Sentences are split on full stops, question marks and
exclamation marks, and paragraphs are separated by blank lines.
How long will my text take to read?
Reading time is estimated at 200 words per minute, the average silent reading speed of an adult, while speaking time uses roughly 130 words per minute — ideal for scripting podcasts, voiceovers and presentations. Multiply your word count by the right figure, or just let the tool do it for you and show minutes and seconds automatically.
Common character & word limits
Different platforms enforce different limits, and overshooting them means your content gets cut off. The live progress bars below the editor keep you inside every one of them:
- X (Twitter) post280 characters
- SEO meta title≈ 60 characters
- SEO meta description≈ 160 characters
- Standard SMS160 characters
- Instagram caption2,200 characters
- YouTube title100 characters
Who is this word counter for?
Writers and bloggers use it to meet editorial word counts and keep paragraphs readable. Students rely on it for essays, assignments and personal statements that demand a specific length. SEO specialists and marketers check meta titles, meta descriptions and social posts against platform limits, while developers and content teams paste product copy and API strings to measure length at a glance. Because everything runs in your browser, it is just as useful for quick mobile checks as for long desktop writing sessions.
Private by design
Your text never leaves your device. There is no signup, no upload to a server and no
tracking of what you write. The only thing stored is an optional draft in your own
browser's localStorage, so you can close the tab and pick up where you left
off. Clear it any time with the Clear button.

Frequently asked questions
How does the word counter count words?
It splits your text on whitespace and counts each token as one word. Hyphenated terms like "well-known" count as a single word, and CJK characters (Chinese/Japanese/Korean) are counted individually. The total updates live as you type.
How is reading time calculated?
Reading time uses an average silent reading speed of 200 words per minute; speaking time uses about 130 words per minute. Both are reliable estimates for articles, scripts and presentations.
How many characters fit in a tweet, meta title or SMS?
An X (Twitter) post allows 280 characters, a meta title is best under 60, a meta description under 160, and a standard SMS is 160. Live progress bars show each limit.
Is my text private?
Yes. Everything runs locally in your browser — your text is never uploaded or stored on a server. Only an optional draft is kept on your own device.
Can I count words in a .txt or .md file?
Yes. Click "Upload", choose a .txt or .md file, and its contents load instantly. You can also download your edited text as a .txt file.
